Walt Appel
Piedmont & Allegheny Ry

The Piedmont & Allegheny Ry. extends from Pittsburgh, PA to Charlotte, NC. The railway uses trackage rights on the B&O to reach Pittsburgh with the main line in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia in the winter of 1957-58. The modeled portion of the railway is in western Virginia with a division point at Shenandoah, Va. It is a point to point layout with staging at Pittsburgh and Charlotte (why did I pick such long names for our end points?). We have a single track main line with two branch lines and use a card card system to route traffic. Control is via CVP Products' Easy DCC. The pike is located on the second floor of our home in a 13 x 24 room. Lance Mindheim of Shelf Layouts designed the railway and fabricated the benchwork and did much of the scenery. The P&A was designed and built for operation by one person. Many of the structures were salvaged from my last layout in NJ and incorporated into the new layout.
